Yesterday And Today At The 2014 World Cup


Nigeria Sports Arena brings to you actions that went down on Monday in Brazil and x-ray the games that will be coming up Today.

The last round of matches in the group stages began on Monday with four fixtures coming from Group A and B, 14 goals were added to the initial 90 goals, Neymar netted twice and emerges the top scorer of the ongoing tourney with four goals.

Neymar continue to live up to expectations as he put smiles on the faces of the Brazilians by getting on the score sheet with two awesome goals before Fred and Fernandinho sealed the emphatic victory for the host while Joel Matip scored the only goal for Cameroon in the 26th minute of the encounter.

Mexico made it through to the round of 16 courtesy of three massive goals from Rafael Marque, Andres
Guardado and Manchester United forward,  Javier Hernandez before Ivan Perisic got a consolation goal for the Croats. The interesting thing about the game was that the four goals were recorded within the space of 15 minutes,  the scoreline left Croatia with no hope than to pack their bags and leave the tournament.

The Spanish team picked up their shambles and returned to winning ways with 3-0 win over the Whopping Boys of Group B, Australia. David Villa opened scoring in the 36 minutes when he flicked in Juanfran's cross while Fernando Torres and Juan Mata netted a goal each in the 69th and 82nd minute of play to hand Australia a fruitless outing at Mundial.

Arjen Robben came close to getting a goal but his low effort went wide, Robin van Persie didn't come to the party with his team mates due to suspension, the La Roja put up a superb performance but they were humbled 2-0 as Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay got on the score sheet of the Clockwork Orange.

TODAY TUESDAY, 24TH OF JUNE

Four games will go down in Brazil from Group C and D. Greece will lock horns with Ivory Coast, Japan and Colombia will be keeping it real, high flying Costa Rica and England will engage each other, Italy and Uruguay game will be the game to look out for considering the prestige of the two teams and the quality of players they have in their folds.

In Group C, having won two out of two group leaders Colombia will be looking for a way to finish with nine points when they take on Japan who only have a point in their bag  in order to play a leeser opponent in the knockout rounds. Ivory Coast have garnered three points while Greece can only boast of a point. The Ivorian needs a draw to progress to the next round,the Piratiko on the other hand needs an outright victory to move on to the round of 16.

In Group D, having qualified already with six points, Costa Rica have nothing really to play for, they will be entertaining the Three Lions who are mathematically out of the 2014 World Cup. The big game will be the game involving Uruguay and Italy, the two teams have played two games, gathered three points and they both needs a win to continue their World Cup dreams, it is a must win for the the two sides anything short of victory for either of the sides will not be too palatable.
